Traitorous Custard Powder

For a long time I thought that when you made custard using custard powder, it was as close as you could get to the real thing without getting the eggs fresh laid from a chicken and growing your own vanilla beans. Tonight I actually looked at the ingredients on the tin and discovered that I've been making VANILLA FLAVOURED CONSTARCH!! [And I'm dubious about the vanilla part ... it's SUPPOSED to be vanilla, but the tin just said "flavouring."]

I'm appalled that some sort of artificial, freeze-dried powder hasn't yet been concocted to simulate eggs, sugar and vanilla. I mean, if they can do it for pavlova (egg white) then why not custard? You've betrayed me for the first and final time, Bird's [so-called] Custard!!

I went parasailing today ... when you get up that high, it's so calm and quiet, and the seaweed and the sand under the water look like clouds in the sky.

I got up for work this morning at 8:00am, much to my dismay, as my bus leaves at 8:22am. Somehow (perhaps moving at superluminal speeds) I made it on time -- in fact, I was there with a few minutes to spare. There was, however, much in the way of very undignified running (I was a small, desperate girl, in a skirt, with a shoulder bag and packed lunch in a plastic bag in hand) alternating with out-of-breath walking en route to the bus stop.

I'm a Finalist!!

The short-list for the 2007 adultshop.com Erotic Art Prize has been finalised and it is with great pleasure that I advise your work “Oedipus/Shiva/Kali/Jocasta” has been selected for exhibition.

A total of 36 finalists have been chosen from hundreds of submissions received from across Australia. The selected works will be judged on March 8th for the $10,000 Prize with the exhibition opening on March 9th and running until April 1st.

The exhibition and initiative is produced in a partnership with ARTRAGE, and the first date to consider is the delivery of your work to THE BAKERY ARTRAGE COMPLEX by February the 19th. You will receive further correspondence soon that covers delivery instructions in more detail, as well as timeline, freight, insurance, artist fees and other relevant exhibition information and logistics.

In the mean time, an email back ASAP confirming your exhibition inclusion would be appreciated, as we are keen to commence media communications that may include reference to your participation.

99 Red Balloons

I'm not quite sure why this song inspires such apparent cult worship (well, it does for at least one person I know) but here it is. The original acrylic painting was a gift and I meticulously painted 99 red dots representing said balloons. I've taken a photo of the original and run it through some photoshop filters. I like the overall effect better, but you lose the clarity and the ability to sit there and count to 99...

Dead Crustaceans

Dreaming: I saw the mother of my best friend from high school, who was pregnant at age 55 with a little girl. She'd just come back from a holiday somewhere. I kept asking her the same question in different ways and instantly forgetting the answer: did you go with your sister, was George with you, did you go alone, etc. Then I was in the same place she'd been, some island, walking along the touristy paths by dune spotted hills and a marina. Dived in, fully clothed, to the water. The air had been hot and still and the water was refreshingly cool and the colours of gemstones. Went right down to the bottom and the movement of my limbs stirred the sand at the bottom and some black skeletons/shells of dead crustaceans floated up. I was momentarily afraid until I saw how aimlessly they drifted on the underwater currents, and realised they were dead, dormant, harmless.

Excerpt - Print Making

Been spending a lot of time down at the printer's lately because I'm making a set of limited edition prints of 5 of the works I'll be exhibiting. The prints are a limited edition run of 10 and can be purchased framed, blockmounted or unframed from the exhibition venue and eventually online after the opening night -- probably via the path of least resistance ie: ebay. Printing is a whole, new, dusty and slightly odd smelling world: paper stock, its thickness and gloss, laminating, block mounting, framing ... and don't even get me started about the wrongness of being charged $5.00 just for the privelege of bringing your artwork in on a thumb drive as a Photoshop file (the alternatives are being charged $3.00 for a PDF, which is of less resolution and will give a lower quality print, or bringing in the orginal piece and having the in-house graphic design artist put it on their system -- I didn't even bother asking how expensive that was going to be) But the learning curve has been navigated and I even put my indicator on 30m before gearing down to 2nd and making the turn -- success!!

Old Man on Bus

I've resolved to sketch a face or body part each day in an effort to improve my figure drawing. As far as New Year's resolutions go, so far so good, though it probably won't be the phenomenal success of the 2006 resolution (to stop boiling and filtering my drinking water in an effort to become less anal).

Excerpt - Venue

Given that I have no formal artistic or arts management training, putting on EXCERPT the exhibition will be a very ... [avoids expletive] ... interesting experience but I've decided to do it so here goes!

Step 1. Concept: Devise one and believe in it! (See my post Excerpt November 19, 2006)

Step 2. Venue: Find one that suits your concept. In my case, that would be Steep Tea Bar on Collie St in Freo. Funky decor, yummy tea and chilled staff. Love it!
